Sports Medicine and shoulder and knee surgery
Dr. Jay Kimmel is an orthopedic surgeon with the Greater Hartford Orthopedic Group. He is an attending at St. Francis Hospital and Johnson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Kimmel attended Cornell University in New York and then the University of Rochester where he earned his doctorate of medicine. He completed his orthopedic residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center where he trained with some of the pioneers in shoulder surgery. He then went on to do a fellowship in Sports Medicine at Temple University Center for Sports Medicine in Philadelphia where he participated in the care of the Temple athletes.
Dr. Kimmel is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and is Board-certified in Orthopedic surgery. He recently re-certified in 2013. Dr. Kimmel specializes in Sports Medicine with emphasis on shoulder and knee injuries. He is a member of the exclusive American Academy of Sports Medicine, whose members have demonstrated by their training and practice a thorough knowledge and commitment to sports medicine. Dr. Kimmel has earned the Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopedic Sports medicine given by the American Board of Orthopedic surgery.
Dr. Kimmel is the co-director of the Connecticut Sports Medicine Institute (CSMI) at St Francis hospital. He is actively involved in the development of this Institute. CSMI will bring the principles of sports medicine to the local community.
Dr. Kimmel is the team physician for the Enfield and Fermi High Schools and Suffield Academy. He is also the team orthopedic surgeon for the American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Dr. Kimmel enjoys teaching and is actively involved in teaching in both the Department of Family Medicine residency program at St. Francis Hospital and the orthopedic residency program at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Kimmel’s excellence in teaching was recently recognized by St. Francis hospital as he was selected as a St. Francis Faculty Fellow.
Dr. Kimmel has been a pioneer in the use of ultrasound in the orthopedic office setting to guide injections. He is one of the few orthopedic surgeons in this area who has passed the American Registry for Diagnostic Ultrasound Examination and is Certified in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. He is a member of the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine.
Dr. Kimmel’s team includes Sharon Racine, his medical assistant for over 20 years, and Alaina Miele, PA-C. Alaina assists Dr. Kimmel in the operating room and in the office. Dr. Kimmel and Alaina see patients in our Enfield, Hartford, East Hartford, and Rocky Hill offices.
He lives with his wife and two daughters in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. In his spare time, he continues to work on his tennis game.
